Stephen Barry is a highly regarded trial attorney and distinguished mediator with a proven track record of success in complex civil litigation across Louisiana and Texas. With more than 30 years of courtroom experience, he is recognized for his strategic insight, commanding presence, and unwavering dedication to client advocacy.
As founding partner of Barry Rome & Scott, Stephen has built a litigation practice that spans a wide range of tort and insurance matters. He has successfully tried cases before juries and judges in state and federal courts and has argued before the Louisiana Supreme Court and multiple appellate courts. His reputation for thorough preparation and persuasive advocacy makes him a formidable presence in any courtroom.
Stephen’s foundation in analytical thinking began with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Early in his career, he worked in General Motors’ elite EDS/Cadillac division, where he designed advanced computer and manufacturing systems—a technical background that continues to inform his meticulous and solution-oriented approach to litigation.
He earned his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, where his passion for trial work took root. Over the decades, he has served in numerous high-profile roles, including appointment by the Louisiana Supreme Court as Judge Pro Tempore in the Traffic and Municipal Courts of New Orleans. He also served as Deputy City Attorney, overseeing civil trial litigation and risk management for one of Louisiana’s largest municipalities. His commitment to the legal profession includes teaching as adjunct faculty at Loyola Law School, mentoring the next generation of trial lawyers.
In addition to his litigation practice, Stephen is an accomplished mediator with formal training from the renowned Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law. Known for his calm, balanced demeanor and practical understanding of both plaintiff and defense perspectives, he is frequently sought after to mediate challenging and high-value disputes. Stephen is admitted to practice in all Louisiana state and federal courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He is also licensed to practice law in Texas.
